Small Business Month Highlights Big Challenge – LocalWork.com Offers Hiring Help

(PHOENIX)– With many small business owners juggling a variety of roles– CEO, accountant, janitor – it can be challenging to focus on growing the bottom line. Doing that requires exceptional employees and finding them can be an even bigger challenge.

According to the 2015 State of Small Business Report, hiring employees is a top business challenge. Here’s the breakdown:

29% of companies with 11-50 employees list hiring as the top challenge.
45% of companies with 51-100 employees list hiring as top challenge (this ties growing revenue as the #1 concern).
56% of companies with 101-499 employees list hiring as their #1 concern.

“As a small business owner who helps other owners find the best employees I understand how daunting the task can seem,” says LocalWork.com Founder Ryan Naylor. “The process can be easier if owners focus on their goals before posting job openings.”

According to the Department of Labor, bad hires and employee turnover can cost a company 30% of its annual earnings. Naylor offers the following tips for small business owners:

  • Be Clear
Define job duties and company needs in detail with tasks and skills that are required.
    Be Thorough
Thoroughly applications and resumes before scheduling interviews.
    Review applicants’ social media presence.
    Be Picky
    Choose top candidates to interview
    Check references
    Trust your gut instincts
    Make the offer
    Promote Culture
Show and tell how your workplace attracts and keeps the best employees
