East Valley dentist hosts supply drive to offer hope to women battling breast cancer

PHOENIX, Ariz. (Sept. 17, 2013)—In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month, J. Philipp Centers for Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, located at 3230 S. Gilbert Road, Ste. 4, in Chandler, is partnering with My Hope Bag to collect supplies to fill Hope Bags that will be given to women diagnosed with breast cancer. During October, the public can stop by the dental office during normal business hours and donate items such as inspirational CDs, colorful blankets, pink bracelets, knitted hats, breast cancer information, pink ribbon merchandise, monetary donations, and more.

Each person who donates to the supply drive—whether a dental patient or not—will be entered to win a free Zoom Whitening treatment. The practice will also be encouraging its regular patients to donate toothpaste and a portion of the proceeds from its oral cancer screenings during October will be donated to My Hope Bag as well.

My Hope Bag, an East Valley 501©3 non-profit, was founded by breast cancer survivor Sarah Ellery. When she was diagnosed, she needed one thing: HOPE. This inspired the idea of giving the gift of hope through Hope Bags filled with comforting items to women diagnosed with breast cancer. “It’s amazing how far a little hope can go,” Ellery says.

“Partnering with My Hope Bag is our way of giving some hope to those affected by breast cancer,” Justin Philipp, DMD, of J. Philipp Centers for Family and Cosmetic Dentistry says. “Women may be more likely to develop breast cancer if they have poor oral health or periodontal disease, so we want the public to be aware of that as well.”

For women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, Philipp says that they should have a dental check up before proceeding with cancer treatment. He also recommends maintaining good oral hygiene during cancer treatment. “Oral infection can be hazardous when your immune system is suppressed,” he notes.

Philipp has advanced training in treating patients receiving cancer treatment and is available for media interviews regarding the link between oral hygiene and breast cancer.
